Computer worms are a form of malware that have the capability to rapidly infect many computers on a network by sending copies of themselves from one system to another over network connections. Once installed, worms can do all sorts of damage like setting up Trojans that can be used to control your computer system to steal personal information or attack other computers.
In 2014 worms accounted for 6% of all new malware creation and 2.75% of all infections.
It can be difficult to get rid of malware like worms once they infect a system, so it’s always best to prevent them from getting onto your computer in the first place. More recently worms have started showing up in social media websites; by replicating via instant messages.
There are several steps you can take to protect yourself and your computer from worms:
- Always have your firewall active.
- Don’t click suspicious links in social media websites.
- Don’t open SPAM emails.
- Always have an antivirus installed and updated on your computer.
- Always check your operating system for updates.
